Nantucket, MA

 Date
1999
Location

(Chronological Order)

July 3rd Branford
To
Greenport, NY
Departed Bruce and Johnson Marina at 5:00 Am wind was from the SW at less then 5 knots
We arrived at Greenport at 1:00 PM.
We got a slip at Brewer's of Greenport. The stay was free since we are a member of Brewers of Branford. This is a great benefit of home port at a Brewers yard (6 Free nights at any Brewers).
The sail over to Greenport was pleasant. We didn't plan the tides or currents very well as going through Plum Gut was a bit choppy. Greenport was a very nice place. Preston's right off the town pier is a great place to shop, you name it they have it. While in Greenport Claudio's is a must. The food was great. This was the only time I wished I had Air Conditioning on the boat. The Temp was about 102 and the dew point was 72. Very Sticky and no breaze.

July 5th Greenport, NY
To
Block Island, RI
Departed Greenport at 5:15 Am wind was from the SW at <5 knots
We arrived at the Great Salt Pond at Block Island at about 12:45pm.
We tides and currents were with us on this leg of the trip. The Breeze was out of the S at 10k so we tried our new spinnaker. Other then a little trouble setting it up the first time all was well. Once in Block Island Sound the waves built 2-4 feet and with the wind dead astern we motored the the Salt Pond. Once in the Salt Pond you can always count on a strong breeze even though no breeze is on the sound.
July 7th Block Island, RI
To
Cuttyhunk, MA
Departed Block Island at 5:15 Am wind was from the S at <5 knots
We arrived at the Cuttyhunk at about 1:30pm.
The was very little breeze and it was dead astern again so we motored again. Cuttyhunk is a excellent spot to pickup a mooring or just drop the hook. In little harbor lands a seaplane some stay south of the white markers. The town is very small. Most of the shop in this town are located right on the town pier. There is a very nice place to get a breakfast on the island it is called the Fisherman Yacht Club. It is open to the public and opens at 7:00 am. It is a bit of a walk. Also when at Cuttyhunk walk up to the water tower. There is an old military lookout post where you can see 360 degrees. You can see Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, Buzzard's Bay, Vineyard Sound, Rhode Island, and Mainland Mass.
July 8th Cuttyhunk, MA
To
Martha's Vineyard, MA
Departed Cuttyhunk at 9:00 Am wind was from the S at about 5 knots
We arrived at the Edgerton at about 3:30pm.
We planed the tides totally wrong and fought the current all the way again. We cut through Quicks Hole. The first night we stayed at the Harborside Marine it was expensive! They didn't have electricity and no heads. I would not suggest that you stay there. The second night we stayed on a mooring for $35 instead for $115 for as 31 ft boat. Edgerton is a very nice town to visit but there is not much to do other than shop and eat. It was a very peaceful stay and very relaxing. When you enter the harbor watch out to the car shuttles the run across the channel.
July 11th
Martha's Vineyard, MA
to
Nantucket, MA
Departed Vineyard at 6:00 Am wind was from the S at 5-10 knots
We arrived at the Nantucket at about 10:10am.
We get the tide thing figured out and rode the the tide. Although the charting software that I tried Capt'n had a caned route from Edgerton to Nantucket. I used that route. What a mistake they sent me over the shoals which reported 9 ft of depth but must have shoaled up. At times we were in 6 feet of water right between Vineyard and Nantucket. In Nantucket we stayed at the Boat Basin. This is a Class spot. The people are very pleasant all amenities were included.
July 13th
Nantucket, MA
to
Martha's Vineyard, MA
Departed Nantucket at 7:00 Am wind was from the NE at 10-18 knots
We arrived at the Oak Bluffs at about 2:00pm. But shortly left to go to Falmouth
We really should have stayed in Nantucket, But because we were meeting people in Block Island on Thursday we forced the issue. The wind shortly after leaving started blowing 22-33 Knots out of the NE the sea's were 8 to 12 Ft. The wind was 120 degrees and it was raining cats and dogs. It was not a fun day of i sailing. When we arrived at Oak Bluffs there were no slips or moorings. We did find a mooring outside the breakwater by the way is totally exposed to the NE. We stayed about an hour and called Falmouth to see if we could get a slip there. The town marina had a bulkhead slip for us. So out into the crap we went again. Once in Falmouth which is WELL protected we got to relax.
July 14th
Falmouth, MA
to
Cuttyhunk, MA
Departed Falmouth at 6:00 Am wind was from the NW at <5 knots
We arrived at the Cuttyhunk at about 1:00pm.
We planed to cut through Quick's Hole, But the tides were better on Buzzard's Bay then in Vineyard Sound. We decided to cut through Woods Hole. Well we did this a the totally wrong time. We were fighting a 5 knot current. It took over 45 mins to get thought. We must have been entertaining to watch.
July 15th
Cuttyhunk ,MA
to
Block Island, RI
Departed Cuttyhunk at 6:00 Am wind was from the NW at <7 knots
We arrived at the Block Island about 11:45am.
The Sail over to Block was a motoring one. We were to meet Mike and Carol of Star Chaser. They arrived about 2 hours later and had dinner and drinks with them. They are just starting the cruise and we were wrapping our up.
July 17th
Block Island ,RI
to
Branford, CT
Departed Block at 6:00 Am wind was from the SW at less then 5 knots and built to 15
We arrived at the Branford 4:40pm.
We Power sailed to Branford the tides were with us shortly before we got to the race. We didn't realize that the plane that the Coast Guard was looking for was JFK Jr. Plane. We started hearing the broadcast on VHF 16 from 10:00am on.
